Sailors Radzik and Larson boxing during a "Smoker"
On March 14,1944, U.S. Navy personnel held the first “Smoker” at MSTC. “Smoker” is a term traditionally used by the U.S. Navy to describe boxing matches. MSTC's inaugural events included music, singing, pie eating contests, wresting and the requisite boxing matches. Similar events were held monthly in Old Main's MacFarland Auditorium. While the first "Smokers" were held for military personnel only, the event was eventually opened to the general public for a small entry fee. Proceeds collected during the events funded the V-12 photo album and the March of Dimes.
