James W. Coleman coached the MSTC Beavers for nine years.  During that time, he served as the head coach for men's football, basketball, and track.

Under Coach Coleman, three teams won conference championships, one in football conference and two in basketball.  Under Coleman's leadership, the Minot State Teachers College athletics continually ranked high in their respective conferences.

Coach Coleman left MSTC during the summer of 1936 after accepting a position as head coach in track for the University of Nevada.
